Bloodstone is a variety of jasper or chalcedony also known as heliotrope. The red inclusions are supposed to resemble spots of blood, hence the name Bloodstone.
Bloodstone is found in India, although there are also sources in Central Europe, Australia, Middle East and in Scotland.
The Ancient Greeks called it the Sun Stone. Babylonians used engraved Bloodstones in their divination. This stone garnered a reputation of sacred power in the Middle Ages when the Bloodstone meaning was linked to the crucifixion of Christ. The legend holds the belief that the blood from His wounds dripped on the dark green earth, which turned to stone.
