Howlite has a natural colour of white with grey markings in the shape of a spider web.

Howlite was named after Henry How, a Canadian chemist, a geologist who identified it in 1868 in Nova Scotia where it was first found by gypsum miners.

It is rare to find it in crystal form, it most often occurs as opaque white irregular shaped nodules with grey streaks that can be quite large and tend to look like cauliflower in Nova Scotia (Canada) and California. It can also be found in the Russia, Germany, Mexico, Namibia, Pakistan and Turkey.
